Wriggle Room and Late Filing Penalties

Do you have a penalty notice from HMRC relating to the late filing of a 2013/14 or 2014/15 Self Assessment tax return?
Then you may be interested in a working practice which HMRC introduced recently, because they don’t have enough staff to check “reasonable excuse” claims. And whatsmore, they have extended the meaning of “reasonable excuse” which used to be limited to things like . .

We are now in the City of London

We have moved 500 metres, out of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and into the City of London. On account of multiple issues with Royal Mail (see the article below) we believe that there is a better chance of the Mount Pleasant Sorting Office delivering our mail, when compared to the Whitechapel Sorting Office.

Whilst most VAT returns are submitted by us electronically, some still have to go in on paper. We posted 4 VAT returns by Special Delivery on 30 Jul 2009 within a guaranteed delivery date of 31 July 2009. If you were affected, the …

What’s going to happen when they strike?
The news this week warns us that there is going to be a national strike from 18 Oct 2009 at Royal Mail. As a result, Royal Mail is losing more goodwill, and some of its key customers are moving elsewhere . . .  as news stories like this one about Amazon and Argos demonstrate . . .
The Guardian News Report
Some staff at Royal Mail, particularly delivery staff in central London, have been staging …
